Learn the London System

A system, not a theory duel: White develops the dark-squared bishop outside the pawn chain and plays the same solid structure against almost anything.

Strategic ideas

Bf4, e3, Nf3, Bd3, Nbd2, c3 — then Ne5 and f4 or the queenside c4 break. The bishop outside the chain means no bad bishop, and the slow build avoids early forcing lines.

Common mistakes

Bd3 blocking the Bf4 bishop's influence, castling into a ...Qb6 or ...Bf5 battery without h3, and playing e4 prematurely allowing ...dxe4 with tempo.

Typical plans

Kingside build-up with Ne5, f4, Qe1-h4. Or the c4 break against Black's dark-square weaknesses created by ...e6 setups.

Variations

  • Main Line: 1. d4 d5 2. Bf4 Nf6 3. e3 e6 4. Nf3
  • vs King's Indian: 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bf4 g6 3. Nf3 Bg7 4. e3
