A sound pawn structure with no weaknesses, and the light-squared bishop developed to f5 or g4 before ...e6 closes it. Black plays for the ...c5 or ...e5 breaks and a superior endgame.

Common mistakes

Playing ...e6 too early and recreating the French bishop problem. Losing the d5 pawn in the Advance line through premature ...Bf5 lines. Failing to generate queenside play in time.

Typical plans

Classical: Bf5, e6, c5 and a slow siege of d4. Advance: counter with c5 and Ne7-g6 hitting the e5 wedge. Panov structures: fight for the isolated pawn square d5.
